Visiting artists augment the summer programming schedule by living and working on campus, providing informal afternoon workshops, and delivering public presentations on their work.

Haystack’s Visiting Artist Program extends our commitment to providing time and space for the development of new ideas in a variety of creative disciplines. This program has become a critical component of the school, and over the years Haystack has hosted a dynamic group of writers, designers, composers, choreographers and visual artists.

Visiting Artist propose a direction to explore during their session, and spend the duration of their time exploring that idea with session participants and faculty. Hosting informal events in the late afternoons, visiting artists have led conversations and readings, directed writing exercises, taken people on walks, and conducted listening sessions that bring people together from multiple studios. Participants choose to join each afternoon, and may attend once or multiple times. Visiting artists also frequently hold individual meetings with session participants and are invited to join critiques and studio discussions.

Most recently we incorporated visiting curators into the program, as a way to highlight the innovative curatorial work being done in and around the field of craft.

Sara Clugage’s art and writing practices focus on political issues in textiles and food. She is the editor-in-chief of Dilettante Army (an online journal for visual culture and critical theory), an organizer for the Wikipedia campaign Art+Feminism, and faculty for the Critical Craft Studies MA program at Warren Wilson College. Since 2015, her art practice has centered on a series of salon dinners themed on the economic models and culinary styles of diverse periods in art history. Her work has been shown at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon, and in residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity; she has written for The Journal of Modern Craft, Surface Design Journal, Textile: The Journal of Cloth and Culture, and Pelican Bomb. @saraclugage

We are pleased to announce that Sara Clugage will be writing the next edition (#37) of the Haystack Monograph Series.

We are thrilled that the other three Visiting Artists the we had planned on welcoming for 2021 - Martha McDonald, Wendy Jacob, and Andres Payan Estrada - will each participate in Haystack’s 2021 Online Programming.
